According to MLB Rumors Correspondent Shane Shapiro, the Mariners are the front-runners in the race to land Japanese pitcher Hiroki Kuroda. Kuroda, who is 103-89 with a 3.69 ERA in eleven seasons in Japan, is also being pursued by the Cubs, Rangers, and Red Sox, among others. However, Shapiro has learned that negotiations are starting to get serious, and that the Mariners are preparing to go to Tokyo to meet with Kuroda himself. The Mariners are desperate for pitching after flopping with Jeff Weaver. I have learned that they are in the running for Carlos Silva, and are looking into a trade that would bring Vicente Padilla to the Mariners. Kuroda would be great in the three or four spot. He would have catcher Kenji Johjima to work with, which would help while crossing the language barrier, along with veteran All Star Ichiro. I don't expect anything to get done until the Winter Meetings, only because of the holiday and because I am sure they will guage other teams interest. Mariners Front Runners For Kuroda

Will the Mariners Be Sellers?
Foxsports.com's Ken Rosenthal has an interesting piece out on why the Mariners and Athletics aren't set on being sellers just yet. The Mariners have good group of veterans they could deal, but currently lead the AL West by 1 1/2 games and the Angels pitching, particularly the bullpen, has been subpar. But if the Mariners were to fall out of contention, here are the players who would likely be available:
Adrian Beltre, 3B: Beltre is in the final year of five year deal making 12 million dollars this season. Beltre is hitting just .208 with 0 HR this season, but is a career .285 hitter after the trade deadline. The power should come, and if it does, he could be on the block.
Erik Bedard, SP: Bedard is making 7.75 million dollars this season and is off to a good start in five games, going 2-1 with 2.61 ERA and 32 strikeouts. Teams will definitely be interested in the left hander if he is made available. He's never pitched more than 200 innings, but if he could give you 140-150, he could still make for an above average two or three starter.
Jarrod Washburn, SP: Washburn is also in the last year of his contract, making 10.35 million dollars. Washburn is 2-1 in five games with a 2.97 ERA. The Mariners have tried to unload Washburn in years past, but could never come to a deal. You know the Twins will likely be in on him again, and it will be interesting to see if other teams jump in. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Nationals dangle an outfielder at them. Maybe Lastings Milledge in a package of players.

Mariners Shopping Batista?
The Mariners are reportedly shopping pitcher Miguel Batista, the Seattle News Tribune is reporting. Batista, who will make 9 million dollars this season, went 4-14 with a 6.26 ERA in 44 games last season. Batista has given up six earned runs in 10.1 innings this spring. Batista, 38, won 16 games last season with a 4.29 ERA in 33 starts for the Mariners.
Sources with knowledge of the Mariners thinking say that the Mariners will try to trade a portion of his salary before releasing him. Batista has been more of a ground ball pitcher over the course of his career, so if the Mariners are willing to take on his salary, he could be moved.

Mariners Sign Hernandez
The Mariners and starting pitcher Felix Hernandez have agreed to a one year deal worth 3.8 million dollars. Hernandez, who went 9-11 with a 3.45 ERA and 175 strikeouts, is set to become a free agent after the 2011 season. Hernandez has the potential to be an All-Star pitcher. He commands his pitches well, keeps them down, and is very mature for his age. He owns a high WHIP, but the Mariners poor defense is one of the problems. If the Mariners added someone who could play defense on the left side, you could see Hernandez have a Brandon Webb-like season the year after Troy Glaus left.
The Mariners would be smart to lock up Hernandez, who will be the most sought after free agent in 2011. If they lock him up for four or five years, especially at a reduced price, it will look like a very good deal.

DiPoto, Ng, Front Runners For Mariners Job
According to Buster Olney, Arizona Diamondbacks executive Jerry DiPoto is one of the front runners for the Mariners GM job. DiPoto has built a reputation as a great scout, having served for the Red Sox during their first World Series in 2004. He also worked for the Rockies and played a key role in drafting some of the players that helped in their 2007 run to the World Series. He is currently with the Diamondbacks, where we have seen several strong trades as well as several smart draft choices (Upton, Scherzer, Parker). He would make for a great pick, and Olney believes the Mariners would have an easy time recruiting Pat Gillick if DiPoto is picked.
Kim Ng, the Dodgers Front Office assistant, is also one of the candidates in line for the job. She has built up quite a good resume working for the Dodgers and likely has a GM job in her future. She doesn't nearly have as much experience as DiPoto, but the Mariners are looking for more of an up and comer more than an established executive. Either way, the Mariners will be in good hands.

Mariners Hire Zduriencik
The Mariners announced today that they are hiring former Brewers assistant Jack Zduriencik as their new general manager. "Seattle is an outstanding organization with great fans, a great ballpark and an ownership group committed to the goal of bringing a World Series to the Northwest," said Zduriencik, "I believe that working together, we can make the Mariners a model franchise. I am looking forward to getting to work immediately, and developing a plan to reach our goal." Zduriencik is one of the most respected executives in baseball and should help the Mariners make strong drafting decisions, as well as bringing in solid players to help the Mariners win.
One move that is expected is to trade Jarrod Washburn, as well as acquire a corner infielder and outfielder. They have a busy offseason ahead of them.

Ichiro To Be Traded?
According to the Seattle Times, several Mariners players think Ichiro is more about playing for hit records than he is for the team. This has lead to a fight nearly breaking out in the clubhouse and knocking out Ichiro. This has left the Mariners clubhouse in disarray and could lead to the team trading Ichiro to move on with the rebuilding and clearing the tension in the clubhouse. Ichiro would draw interest from several teams and the Mariners would likely land some solid prospects as well as clear up some payroll. They could put that money towards the free agent market or towards drafting better players, something that would really help their rebuilding.
The Mariners have never been against trading Ichiro, having nearly trading him twice since 2005. It is very possible that the Mariners would trade Ichiro while his value his high and cash in the prospects.
Mariners Leading Towards Ng?
According to FOXSPORTS.com, the Mariners are scanning the market for a new GM and may leaning towards hiring Dodgers long time assistant Kim Ng. While Mariners president Armstrong has not given up on the Mariners for being a contender next season, he believes an outside perspective needs to come in and guide the team. While there are certainly several other candidates, including former Twins GM Terry Ryan, Ng is close geographically and has helped the Dodgers build their team into a contender.
A source close to me who spoke with Mariners President Chuck Armstrong said in no way will this be a publicity stunt. They will hire the best candidate available and that may be Kim Ng, who has been with the Dodgers for the past seven years and the Yankees before that.

Team by Team Updates from Orlando
Angels: After signing Gary Matthews to a five year deal, the Angels have kept fairly quiet. GM Bill Stoneman arrived late Monday and had minor discussions with a couple different teams. The Angels are tossing names around like Bartolo Colon and Felix Rodriguez in hopes of acquiring a bat. But other than just rumors, there has been no news to report.
Astros: The latest news from the Winter Meetings for the Astros is that Andy Pettitte wants to pitch next year and is leaning towards returning to the Astros. This could influence Roger Clemens decision on whether he wants to return to Boston, New York, Houston, or just retire. The Astros are also discussing a possible trade for Jason Jennings.
Athletics: The A's appear to be the number one team to sign Mike Piazza as their DH. The deal is a two year deal worth 15 million dollars. They are also working on a deal with Alan Embree.
Blue Jays: The Blue Jays are desperately trying to retain Ted Lilly but it appears that the Cubs are the favorite. Lilly has received a four year offer, worth 40 million dollars. "That's just hearsay from our end," Ricciardi said. "I personally talked to Ted Lilly on Saturday and had a great conversation with him. That's really all I can go on." The Blue Jays are also targeting Gil Meche, and are talking with the White Sox about trading Vernon Wells.

Mariners Close In On Griffey
ESPN.com is reporting that the Mariners are stepping up their pursuits for free agent outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. Griffey hit .249 with 18 HR last season in 149 games between the White Sox and Reds, and played his first 11 seasons with the Mariners. It will be a great reunion for longtime Mariners fans who saw Griffey hit the first of his 611 (and counting) homeruns.

Ken Griffey Jr. Update
The Ken Griffey Jr. race is starting to come to a close, with the Braves and Mariners as his two suitors. Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports that Griffey is sensitive about offending the Mariners while David O'Brien believes Griffey will choose the Braves after talking with Chipper Jones, who is currently working on his own extension. Griffey hit .249 with 18 HR in 143 games for the Reds and White Sox last season, but hit .274 with 6 HR after the All-Star Game.
Atlanta has a big African American population, something that could factor into Griffey's decision. Griffey approached Major League Baseball in 2007 about wearing the number 42 on Jackie Robinson Day. He also worked with young African Americans to get them more involved in the game. Griffey played in Seattle for 11 seasons and has been linked to the Mariners for a season and a half. He is expected to make a decision in the next day or two.

Mariners Fire Bavasi
The Seattle Mariners, owners of the leagues worst record, have fired GM Bill Bavasi after his 5th season as the teams general manager. The Mariners were expected to compete for a playoff spot this year but got off to a poor start and have not been able to rebound. Vice president/associate general manager Lee Pelekoudas will take over for the remainder of the season. With talent such as Felix Hernandez, Adrian Beltre, and recently acquired Erik Bedard, They Mariners certainly had high expectations heading in, trading their top prospect Adam Jones as well as George Sherrill for a chance to compete now with Bedard. Bedard has struggled and has already been whispered in trade rumors, a frequent reminder of what appears to be a poor trade. The M's still have plenty of talent so it remains to be seen whether they will be big time sellers at the trade deadline or sit pretty with their talent and prepare for next season.

Mariners Fortify Bench, Sign Branyan
The Mariners signed former Brewers utility man Russell Branyan to a one year deal worth 1.4 million dollars, according to FOXSports.com. Branyan hit .250 with 12 HR in 132 at-bats this season, so he will make for a good go-to guy off the bench for the Mariners. The Mariners are also listening to offers about Adrian Beltre and JJ Putz, but nothing is serious just yet.

Cubs Acquire Heilman
The Cubs have traded shortstop Ronny Cedeno and Garrett Olson to the Mariners for right handed pitcher Aaron Heilman. This move gives the Cubs another option for the five spot in the rotation, joining Sean Marshall, Angel Guzman, and Chad Gaudin in the race for the five spot. Ronny Cedeno's improved plate discipline and slick defense gives the Mariners a solid young player who could really contribute to the Mariners chances next season.
He can play second and short, but has some experience at third as well. The Cubs also flirted with the idea of putting him in the outfield, so the Mariners could try that as well. If Cedeno continues his strong play, he could trump Yuniesky Betancourt out the starting job at shortstop.

Ned Yost to Mariners?
With former Brewers executive Jack Zduriencik as the Mariners GM, it is possible he would bring Ned Yost in to be the Mariners manager. Trammell to Seattle?
The Mariners plan to interview GM candidates immediately following the World Series. Following that decision, the Mariners will interview somewhere between three and five candidates. One of those candidates is believed to be Cubs bench coach Alan Trammell, who has been working closely with manager Lou Piniella. Piniella and teammates have praised Trammell for his work ethic and the approach he takes with players. He seems perfect for the Mariners, who need a manager who can take charge, but let the players run the clubhouse. He was not given a very good team in the early 2000s with the Tigers, but some of those players are doing much better now than back then, and that can be credited to Trammell and his staffs hard work.
Trammell may not want the Mariners job. He is working under one of the best managers in baseball with one of the best teams in baseball, so why leave now. If he continues to work with Piniella it is likely a better job will open up, perhaps the Cubs' job when Piniella decides to retire.

Mets Acquire Putz
The Mets, in an attempt to rebuff their bullpen, have acquired JJ Putz in a three team deal involving the Mariners and Indians. In the deal, the Mariners receive Aaron Heilman, Endy Chavez, Mike Carp, and minor leaguers Maikel Claito, Jason Vargas, Ezequiel Carrera from the Mets as well as Franklin Gutierez from the Indians. The Indians receive reliever Joe Smith and Luis Valbuena and the Mets also get Jeremy Reed and Sean Green from Seattle.
The Mets now have one of the best 8th and 9th inning combos, which will certainly take pressure off of some of their middle relievers who were asked to step into late inning roles last season. Mariners setup man Brandon Morrow made it known that he does not want to return to the closer role, so it is possible that the Mariners may trade Heilman and a prospect to the Rockies for Huston Street.

Will The Mariners Trade Beltre?
Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik has a decision to make: Trade Adrian Beltre entering his walk year or offer him an extension, protecting themselves from having to overpay him after he puts together a solid year. While there are arguments for both case, the Mariners would be smart to move him for prospects and start the rebuilding phase with extra money and a .260 power hitter out of their lineup. The Giants, Diamondbacks, and Brewers are all possibilities for Beltre, who has one year and twelve million dollars remaining on his salary. A team like the Brewers could take a chance on him because not only will he be better than Bill Hall, but his numbers should improve entering a contract year.
The Mariners will be busy this offseason, and it starts with building up their farm system, finding an outfielder, and a legitimate first baseman.

BUYERS
Yankees
- Without a doubt. Losing Alex Rodriguez hurts, but what hurts even more is stating all season that they will not negotiate once he opts out. We know the Yankees are dieing to talk money with Rodriguez, but have made no indication that they actually will. Because of it, expect the Yankees to basically unload their farm system again for players Miguel Cabrera and possibly Johan Santana. I expect them to get Cabrera, and then go after a solid pitcher to help the rotation now thatPettitte is gone.
Potential Sellers: Marlins, Twins, Mariners, Rockies, and Orioles.
Rangers
- The Rangers have some solid players that are drawing interest. And the Rangers, are looking for solid upgrades around the field. They are looking to find a first baseman, while exploring the market for another infielder and center fielder. They have talked with the RedSox about a potential deal for Coco Crisp, but no real progress has been made. They are also looking into the possibility of acquiring RichieSexson from the Mariners in exchange for Vicente Padilla.
Potential Sellers: Red Sox, Mariners, Cubs, Dodgers, Braves, and White Sox.
Dodgers
- They bought Joe Torre and are already a better team because of it. They are very interested in Alex Rodriguez, Andruw Jones, Hiroki Kuroda, and even Johan Santana. Obviously, they will not get them all, but one, maybe two is a definite possibility. They have the money to spend, and will definitely be spending.
Potential Sellers: Twins, Marlins, White Sox, Cubs, Braves, and Rangers.
Giants
- The Giants have a lot of wholes to fill now that Barry Bonds has left and are already looking at possibilities such as Alex Rodriguez, Carl Crawford, andDelmon Young. All they will be selling some of their pitchers, I think there best bet is signing Rodriguez, and holding on to some of their pitchers for just a little bit longer.
Potential Sellers: Devil Rays and Phillies.

- They will probably lose both Torii Hunter and Carlos Silva and are exploring all options. They are looking at Rocco Baldelli, Coco, Crisp, and according to MLB Rumors Correspondent Steve Wilson, Felix Pie as well. Not only that, but they are exploring the possibility of trading for Jon Garland, but I doubt that will happen. Despite them trying to trade Johan Santana, more upgrades will come from buying.
Potential Sellers: Devil Rays, Athletics, and Rockies.

They are shopping their whole pitching staff in exchange for some solid prospects while looking for a suitor for JoeCrede. Mariners, Fields Agree To Deal
The Mariners and first round draft pick Josh Fields have agreed to a deal, Jim Callis is reporting. Fields will receive 1.75 million dollars, after requesting 2 million dollars. The Mariners expect Fields to reach the majors quickly as a reliever. He combines a mid-nineties fastball with a hard curveball, which will likely be seen in Mariners big league camp next week.
