Interview with Angels Expert Stephen Smith

Stephen Smith, founder, writer, and producer of www.futureangels.com discusses up to the minute news about the Angels farm and was nice enough to answer some of my questions for MLB Rumors. It is a great site even if you’re not an Angels fan to read up on the future stars that could soon be on your team or pitching against them.

ELI: Who is the top prospect in the Angels farm?

STEPHEN: Top position prospect is Brandon Wood. Top pitching prospect is Nick Adenhart.

ELI: Who from the LoA/HighA Leagues is looking like they could turn into something?

STEPHEN: I think Rancho Cucamonga shortstop Hainley Statia is underrated. I ranked him #6 last November on my FutureAngels.com Top 10 Prospects list. Consider him the rough equivalent of Orlando Cabrera. With Cedar Rapids, I'll go out on a limb and name Warner Madrigal. He was once a power hitter prospect in the lower minors, but after multiple hand injuries and a general lapse of plate discipline, the Angels converted him last year into a relief pitcher. He's always had a power arm. From what I saw in spring training, he throws in the mid-90s and has a decent slider. The Angels teach all their young pitchers the changeup, so he'll mix in that pitch eventually. It may take him a while due to inexperience, but give him 4-5 years and maybe he'll be in a big-league uniform.

ELI: Who is the best prospect to come out of the Angels system?

STEPHEN: Ever?! Probably Tim Salmon. In this decade, you have plenty of candidates -- John Lackey, Francisco Rodriguez, Scot Shields to name a few. I think Casey Kotchman and Howie Kendrick will be special too. Jered Weaver as well.

ELI: When did you start doing this? Why?

STEPHEN: A long story. The short version ... In 1998 I started helping out the Angels' Cal League affiliate which at the time was in Lake Elsinore. I went out to visit Cedar Rapids and got peppered with questions about the players that had moved up the ladder from there to Lake Elsinore. I realized there was an interest not just by Angels fandom but also fans in the affiliates' towns, as well as the players' parents scattered around the world. The Internet was just starting to emerge as a popular technology amongst the masses, and to me seemed like a good solution. That was back in the days when modems were still slow dial-ups and web sites were mostly text. We've come a long way since then, and FutureAngels.com has always been ahead of the curve with photos, audio interviews, and video highlight clips. Now I'm doing a semi-monthly podcast. All these are tools for helping to bring Angels minor league baseball to those with an interest. I fell in love with minor league baseball ten years ago, and now I'm totally bored by going to a major league game. When you're one of 2,000 people in the stands, it's a much more intimate experience than when you're one of 40,000 people in the stands. And in the minors, if you're willing to volunteer your time and resources, the team will embrace you and make you part of the family. There's no bigger thrill than knowing you played a small part in helping along a young man to a major league career. I have plenty of friends in the big leagues now, and friends who are players' parents. Every once in a while, I'll hear from a player or parent who left the organization long ago. That's special to know they remember you.

ELI: Did you play baseball growing up?

Not really. My family couldn't afford to pay for Little League and the gear and what not. But I was an avid Angels fan, and saw a game in Anaheim Stadium when it opened in 1966. We had seats behind home plate for a Sunday day game. There were maybe 5,000 people in the stands. It's changed a bit since then. :-)

ELI: What kind of stress is put on a top prospect who is stuck in AAA?

STEPHEN: Personally, I think any stress is self-inflicted. It's different for every player. A guy who's 32 in Triple-A is different from a guy who's 22 in Triple-A. There are guys who float around for years in Triple-A, going from team to team. Once a player has six seasons of professional experience, he can take his minor league free agency if his club doesn't put him on the 40-man roster. So there are guys who each year float from organization to organization, looking for a place to play and a shot at touching the big leagues. For a top prospect like Brandon Wood, or even for a kid like Jeff Mathis who's only 24 yet is in his third Triple-A season, they have plenty of time. Looking at Mathis, I remind people that Jason Varitek wasn't a regular major league catcher until he was 26. Varitek was drafted at 23 after graduating late from college. Stress is different for everyone. Some thrive from it, others collapse, and there are others who just cruise along having a good time.

ELI: Is players morale different in AA and AAA because they are so close to the bigs then in LoA and HighA? How?

STEPHEN: For the most part, I don't think "morale" is an issue. Sure, they'd all like to be in the big leagues, but nobody gets depressed or throws a temper tantrum. The Angels teach a team philosophy and stress that it's all about what's best for the parent club. For example, Curtis Pride, who's 38, is in Double-A this year so he can continue to play every day while three prospects play every day in the Triple-A outfield. I don't think morale is an issue for him; in fact, he's an example of what a team player is all about. Other organizations may have head cases, but the Angels seem to largely avoid those personalities.

ELI: Where do the Angels have a lot of depth? Where do they not have a lot?

STEPHEN: In general, their depth is in pitching, middle-infielders, and catchers. I find that a lot of fans misunderstand why middle-infield depth is so important. Middle infielders are generally the most athletic position players on the roster, and therefore have the flexibility to move to other positions. Guys who play the corner outfield positions and the infield corners generally don't have such flexibility. The Angels have tinkered with moving Erick Aybar to center field. They recently moved Brandon Wood to third base. Howie Kendrick got moved to first base when he was called up last year to get his bat in the lineup. There's been some thought over the years to moving Sean Rodriguez behind the plate (which I don't think will happen). The Angels could probably use more power hitters, but their style of play really is more about advancing and scoring runners, what I call "Contactball." They're not going to sit around waiting for a long ball, although they certainly have power hitter prospects in Casey Kotchman, Brandon Wood, Kendry Morales and a couple other guys at the upper levels. They're so deep in pitching that they don't need to score 6-7 runs a game to win. If they get to the 7th with a three-run lead, they're probably going to win. Who cares if it's 4-1 or 10-7? A win is a win.

Power Hitter Tops Angels List

Although Angels owner Arte Moreno has shot down rumors that the Angels will go for Alex Rodriguez, we all know that they are looking for a power hitter. Even if Mike Lowell hits the market, the Angels will look for someone who will hit homeruns and drive in runners. Adrian Beltre has being shopped by the Mariners in previous off seasons and might finally get traded if the Angels are interested. Beltre has twenty-four million dollars left on his contract for the next two years and the Mariners would definitely have to chip in cash to get some young prospects in return. Beltre has batted .321 with 8 HR since 1999 at Angels Stadium. This season, he batted .276 with 26 HR, 99 RBI, and 14 SB in 149 games with the Mariners. Although he made eighteen errors, the Angels are more interested in his bat than his glove. If Adrian Beltre isn't available or the Angels are not able to pull off a trade, they could look to the Orioles and try and pull off a trade for disgruntled shortstop Miguel Tejada, but only if he is willing to switch to third base. He played seven seasons in the AL West and played in 1,552 consecutive games, so there is no doubt that he is reliable. The injury this year was a freak accident that hasn't seemed to effect his swing. He batted .296 with 18 HR and 81 RBI while batting .272 with 8 HR against the Angels in Anaheim throughout his career. Either one would fill the whole at third base and if Brandon Wood appears ready in Spring Training, one could switch to the DH spot. Or they could play Tejada or Beltre and get Wood his at-bats while trying to convert him back to shortstop, that works too. Orlando Cabrera is a free agent after 2008 and could be traded to give Wood the everyday spot. He has played three games at shortstop this season but he is athletic enough to make the switch. Bill Stoneman will definitely shop his players to get a big name bat for his lineup. Whether it is Alex Rodriguez, Adrian Beltre, Miguel Tejada, or Miguel Cabrera, something will go down this off season.

Angels Interested In Sabathia?

Could the Angels possibly add forty-five million dollars in payroll by signing just two players? The Angels are reportedly looking to sign both Mark Teixeira and CC Sabathia, but view Teixeira as their number one priority. The Angels payroll at the start of the 2008 season was at 119 million dollars, and while losing Rodriguez and Anderson will bring that down, several players will see their salaries increase, which brings it right back to nearly 115 million dollars. The Angels have a team compiled of All-Stars, and bringing in CC Sabathia might not be worth their while, despite the strong finish he had last season. 

Bringing in an established veteran like Derek Lowe would be cheaper and possibly better for the Angels. Lowe would be playing for a team with a good offense, solid defense, and a great bullpen, not to mention pitching in mostly pitcher friendly parks against poor offensive teams. The Los Angeles Times believes that if the Angels lose both Teixeira and Sabathia, they will pursue free agent A.J. Burnett.

Angels Plan To Be Aggressive

Angels executives are exploring every avenue this offseason to make their team better. These plans currently depend on Mark Teixeira and Francisco Rodriguez, but the Angels will be make moves this season. According to the Chicago Tribune, the Angels may turn to White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko in hopes of pulling off a deal involving Chone Figgins. Figgins is younger and has more to offer a team than Konerko, so there would probably have to be prospects involved, but it isn't out of the realm of possibility. The Angels will also inquire about starting pitcher CC Sabathia, who would put the Angels over the top. The Angels have a lot of money to spend this offseason, but will hesitate taking on big contracts or dumping young players like Figgins.

One thing to worry about is disrupting player chemistry. Pushing veteran Garrett Anderson out in the last year of his contract was hard to see, and bringing in two or three free agents may disrupt the peace in the clubhouse. GM Tony Reagins is very smart and will likely make some small additions to help the farm system or bench, while possibly putting some money out on the market to either bring back a couple players, or go out and find new ones. They should be very busy.

Angels To Pursue Martinez?

The Angels could be in serious trouble if they do not add a pitcher. The sudden death of Nick Adenhart on Thursday shocked the Angels, not to mention putting a hole at the bottom of their rotation. With Lackey, Escobar, and Santana on the DL, the Angels have Jered Weaver and Joe Saunders leading their rotation. Dustin Mosely and Shane Loux follow, making for a pretty mediocre rotation. 

The Angels expect Lackey, Escobar, and Santana to be out till late May, so adding a veteran like Pedro Martinez to come in and loosen up the clubhouse could help the team morale. Martinez refuses to back off his contract demands, so the Angels may look elsewhere. But, Martinez has a 5-1 record with a 2.83 ERA in 9 career games at Angels Stadium.

Angels Concede Cabrera, After Tejada

It appears the Angels have given up on acquiring Miguel Cabrera and are now focused on Miguel Tejada. Sources are saying talks have not gotten to specifics, but it makes sense that they would turn to Tejada. But where does Brandon Wood fit in? Or Chone Figgins? It is possible they would play Wood at short, Figgins at third, and play Tejada at DH. That would keep the team together and give Wood a spot to shine. The Angels nearly acquired Tejada from the Orioles back in 2006 for Ervin Santana and Erik Aybar, but that deal fell through. The Orioles hope they can trade Tejada before the end of the off season and this seems like a perfect fit. The Orioles could get Ervin Santana, Howie Kendrick, Chris Bootcheck, and maybe Sean O'Sullivan and shed some cash to spend elsewhere while the Angels get the big bat they need. "We're dealing from a position of strength, and we're confident that we'll be able to get the bat that we're looking for," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said from his California home last night. I expect something to get done around the Winter Meetings in two weeks.

UPDATE: According to MLB Rumors Corresponent Tim Wallace, the Orioles have opened talks with shortstop Cesar Izturis suggesting that they are in talks with the Angels.

Angels Could Move Aybar

Angels shortstop Erik Aybar is hit .303 in the month of May, bringing his season total to a .277 average with 1 home run. Aybar, 25, is blocking top prospect Brandon Wood, who is hitting .308 with 11 home runs in 39 games for the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees. If the Angels were to trade Aybar, it would open up a spot for the long awaited. 

Ken Rosenthal mentions in his Full Count that the Mets, Cardinals, or Royals could be possible destinations, but I wouldn't rule out the Padres either. The Padres are looking to trade Jake Peavy, but do want to trade him to the Dodgers. They nearly worked out a trade with the Cubs, but it is becoming more clear that the Cubs can't make a move until the ownership is settle, which at the current pace, probably won't be complete until Opening Day 2010. 

If the Angels were to package Aybar in a deal with three other prospects, they could probably land starting pitcher Jake Peavy. Trevor Reckling and Trevor Bell are two solid young pitchers that the Padres could target. 

John Lackey is going to be a free agent at the end of the season, and will likely command a good deal despite the down economy. However, if the Angels add Peavy, it gives them a lot of leverage in negotiations with Lackey. If Lackey decides to sign elsewhere, the Angels would likely receive a compensation draft pick.

Angels Withdraw Offer To Teixeira

The Angels are backing out of the Mark Teixeira races, Yahoo! Sports is reporting. The Angels became the second team in recent days to step out of the Mark Teixeira races, joining the Red Sox who found his price too steep. The Angels and Red Sox, who found his price to steep, are pressuring Boras to work out a deal with the Nationals or Orioles, the only teams left in the bidding. The Angels offered an 8-year deal, worth 160 million dollars; Teixeira is seeking eight years for 180 million dollars.

While Teixeira would like to play out East, he would probably take the 170 million that the Red Sox were offering before going to the Nationals or Orioles. The ball is in Boras' court.

UPDATE: The source informed Tim Brown said that the Angels would not work with his agent, which could be a call to Mark Teixeira to step in and get a deal done. Hmmm...

Angels To Rework Matthews Jr.'s Contract?

The Angels are trying very hard to move outfielder Gary Matthews Jr., but have been unsuccessful thus far. They talked to the Reds about a deal, which would have involved Aaron Harang or Bronson Arroyo. But talks stopped when the Angels were unwilling to part with a pitcher along with Matthews. If the Angels don't find a taker, it is possible the Angels could work out a new deal that involves deferrals in payments.

Byrd Interested In Angels?

Free agent pitcher Paul Byrd is reportedly interested in joining the Angels, the LA Times is reporting. The report goes on to say that the Angels do not have much interest in signing Byrd, mostly because they are not looking to add money to their payroll. "My agent talked to them pretty recently . . . but they're not spending money, and they say they're going to stay in-house," Byrd said by phone. "They have [John] Lackey and [Ervin]Santana coming back, [Kelvim]  Escobar. They want to see what their young guys can do. I take no offense."

The Angels opted to go with Anthony Ortega for the time being, and may look to trade for a pitcher before going out to the market. You can probably rule out the Angels for Pedro Martinez, who sources say, is expected to sign within the next two weeks.

Quick Hits: Angels, Roberts, Free Agents, O'Day

Quick Hits:

• Contrary to reports, the Angels have not made offers to free agents Paul Byrd or Pedro Martinez. The Angels are interested however, and will continue to discuss their possibilities internally.
• Free agent Dave Roberts is set to interview for a job at the MLB Network. A veteran player with playoff and World Series experience - should be a solid pick up for them. 
• ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick has a free agent update out on his blog.
• The Rangers have claimed Darren O'Day off waivers from the Mets. He was their Rule 5 pick from the Angels, so he must be kept on the 25-man roster or he will be offered back to the Angels.

Angels To Sign Abreu

The Angels and Bobby Abreu are closing in on a one year deal, the Los Angeles Times is reporting. The deal is expected to be done by Spring Training, meaning Abreu will be able to suit up as an Angel. Abreu drew interest from the Cubs, Mets, Braves, and Dodgers, with the Angels toying with the idea along the way. They jumped in late last week and were able to get a deal worked out quickly, a specialty of Angels GM Tony Reagins. 

Abreu is still athletic and should be able to contribute, but already have four other outfielders. Manager Mike Scoscia is very flexible and could move Rivera to play some first base with Kendry Morales. More importantly, Abreu gives the Angels a solid lefty bat in the lineup.

Weekly Roundup

What started as a nice start to another baseball season, we were blindsided with the news that Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in an automobile accident. Off to a promising start with a six inning shutout performance, the top pitching prospect looked to be blossoming into a true major leaguer. The news of his death was a tragedy, not to mention the three other lives that were taken as well. The Angels, already with their three top pitchers on the DL, are now forced to find a replacement. The Angels held a very nice ceremony for the victims before Saturday's game, and were able to beat the Red Sox in his honor. On a lighter note, there were several young players who had nice weeks, and teams are looking to these guys to build off their strong starts.

Jordan Schafer, Braves: .348 AVG, 2 HR, .423 OBP.

- Schafer has put up great numbers at the plate and has shown off his speed in the outfield. 

Emilio Bonifacio, Marlins: .500 AVG, 1 HR, .517 OBP, 4 SB.

- Bonifacio is off to a great start at third for the Marlins. The talent has always been there, it's poor consistency that has been the problem.

Adam Lind, Blue Jays: .400 AVG, 3 HR, 12 RBI, .419 OBP.

- Entering his third major league season, Lind has taken big strides at the plate. He could play a big role in the Blue Jays playoff hopes this season.

Jeremy Guthrie, Orioles: 2-0 W-L, 2.25 ERA, 5 K, 12 H.

- Guthrie has been an Orioles project for the past three seasons, and he might be putting his stuff together. He did put up 10 wins last season, and is off to a good start this year.

Josh Johnson, Marlins: 2-0 W-L, 0.57 ERA, 1 ER, 15 SO.

- Johnson is a big, hard throwing right hander who combines his fastball with a hard slider. He was able to beat Johan Santana today, and is hoping to lead that young rotation.

Here are some other young players whose first week is something they would like to forget:

John Lannan, Nationals: 0-2 W-L, 10.00 ERA, 10 ER, 3 BB, 9 IP. 

- The Nationals hope Lannan can breakout for the Nationals after putting up 10 wins last season, but he hasn't been able to command his fastball early on.

Scott Olsen, Nationals: 0-2 W-L, 14.63 ERA, 8 IP, 13 ER, 2 HR, 6 BB.

- The Nationals hoped that when they traded for Olsen, he would emerge into a solid top of the rotation starter to lead the Nationals. So far, that hasn't been the case.

Chris Davis, Rangers: .045 AVG, 1 H (22 AB), 0 HR, 0 RBI, 10 SO.

- There is a lot of pressure on Davis to put up big numbers after having a breakout 2008 campaign. So far he has struggled mightily and the Rangers could be scrambling if Davis doesn't pick it up.

Injuries

Brandon Webb, Diamondbacks: 15-day DL, shoulder tightness.

Doug Brocail, Astros: 15-day DL, strained rotator cuff.

Rumors

After Cole Hamels struggled through his first outing, several believe that he is showing the effects of an overworked pitching from last season. Hamels told the Philadelphia Inquirer that he is "fine now."

The Angels may be forced to add another pitcher with Escobar, Lackey, and Santana on the DL. Pedro Martinez is available. The LA Times mentions Anthony Ortega and Darren Oliver asi in-house possibilities.

Dodgers outfielder Delwyn Young is out of options, and several scouts have been watching him during his rehab assignment. The Indians, Pirates, and Phillies are interested.

Minor League Update

Juan Miranda, Yankees (AAA): .474 AVG, 2 HR, 11 RBI.

- The Yankees won't hesitate to recall Miranda if Teixeira goes down for an extended amount of time.

Matt LaPorta, Indians (AAA): .625 AVG, 1 HR, 1 SO, .667 OBP.

- LaPorta could be playing for the Indians very soon if he continue to swing a big bat.

Tyler Flowers, White Sox (AA): .417 AVG, 1 HR,  2 RBI, .500 OBP

- Flowers is the young power hitter the White Sox hope can fill the shoes of Jim Thome or Jermaine Dye when there time with the team runs out. So far he is looking really good.

David Price, Rays (AAA): 0-0 W-L, 4.91 ERA, 4 SO, 3.2 IP.

- Price will be pitching for the Rays at the major league level really soon. Once he gets comfortable and into more of a routine will the Rays give him the opportunity. 

What to look for next week...

Interviews will start to be scheduled next week.

Rich Harden, who is coming off a solid 10 strikeout performance, will be making his second start of the season. Some think that Harden is already DL bound, so it will be interesting to see if he can string together back to back strong outings.

The Pirates, Cubs, Nationals, Rays, Dodgers, and Mets all have their home openers. 

Tigers pitcher Rick Porcello will make his second start of the season.

Team by Team Updates from Orlando

Angels: After signing Gary Matthews to a five year deal, the Angels have kept fairly quiet. GM Bill Stoneman arrived late Monday and had minor discussions with a couple different teams. The Angels are tossing names around like Bartolo Colon and Felix Rodriguez in hopes of acquiring a bat. But other than just rumors, there has been no news to report.

Astros: The latest news from the Winter Meetings for the Astros is that Andy Pettitte wants to pitch next year and is leaning towards returning to the Astros. This could influence Roger Clemens decision on whether he wants to return to Boston, New York, Houston, or just retire. The Astros are also discussing a possible trade for Jason Jennings.

Athletics: The A's appear to be the number one team to sign Mike Piazza as their DH. The deal is a two year deal worth 15 million dollars. They are also working on a deal with Alan Embree.

Blue Jays: The Blue Jays are desperately trying to retain Ted Lilly but it appears that the Cubs are the favorite. Lilly has received a four year offer, worth 40 million dollars. "That's just hearsay from our end," Ricciardi said. "I personally talked to Ted Lilly on Saturday and had a great conversation with him. That's really all I can go on." The Blue Jays are also targeting Gil Meche, and are talking with the White Sox about trading Vernon Wells.

Braves: Reports from Orlando are saying that the Braves may look to trade Adam LaRoche and Marcus Giles. However, there are also rumors concerning Andruw Jones as well. It appears that GM John Schuerholz will look to trades before signings.

Brewers: The Brewers have been talking with teams about trading Geoff Jenkins or Kevin Mench, and have heard the Red Sox are interested in acquiring Derrek Turnbow. The Brewers are also interested in signing Kenny Lofton. They also are working a deal with Tony Graffanino who appears to be staying in Milwaukee.

Cardinals: The Cardinals have inked a five year, 65 million dollar deal with Chris Carpenter. The also plan to meet with Jason Schmidt. Other than that, the Cardinals have been relatively quiet.

Cubs: The Cubs have made an offer to Ted Lilly at an estimated 40 million over four years. They are also looking into Jason Schmidt and Gil Meche. They are also looking to trade Jacque Jones, have inquired about Jason Jennings, and may look to sign outfielders Cliff Floyd and Kenny Lofton.

Devil Rays: The Devil Rays main priority is to build their bullpen. However, that has not stopped them from looking to trade Rocco Baldelli, Jorge Cantu, or Carl Crawford. They are also working on a deal to sign Akinori Iwamura.

Diamondbacks: The Dbacks have been very quiet, hoping they could possibly sign Mark Mulder. The have also met with the agents of Keith Foulke.

Dodgers: The Dodgers appear to be interested in Jason Schmidt and have only had few conversations. On Monday, the Dodgers and Red Sox were talking about a trade for Manny Ramirez, but according to Colletti, the deal has a less than "5 percent" chance of getting done. They are close to finalizing a deal with Mike Lieberthal and rookie closer Takashi Saito.

Giants: The Giants have signed numerous players over the past week and have just began to finalize them. They have signed Dave Roberts, Rich Aurilia, Bengie Molina, and have resigned Pedro Feliz. The Giants are looking into signing Ryan Klesko, and have inquired about the Mariners Richie Sexon and the Cubs Jacque Jones.

Indians: Joe Borowski will take a physical either today or tomorrow for the Indians and then he will sign a one year deal. However, they will still look into signing Octavio Dotel or Keith Foulke. The Indians are really focusing on pitching and beefing up their bullpen after signing Dellucci.

Mariners: The Mariners are in hot pursuit of two pitchers. They plan to meet with Jason Schmidt and appear to be the favorites if the Cubs sign Lilly. However, Schmidt has said he wants to win now and has no problem leaving the West Coast. They are also looking to trade for Jason Jennings, but so are several other teams.

Marlins: The Marlins are showing serious interest in acquiring Rocco Baldelli. The Marlins are reluctant to part with pitching, but according to sources, Scott Olsen could get the deal done.

Mets: The Mets were in hot pursuit of Barry Zito but may have to settle for a veteran because of how high Zito's price tag is. Scott Boras is reportedly asking for a six to seven year deal, worth 102 million dollars. The Rangers seem more willing to offer the big deal.

Nationals: The Red Sox and Giants are talking a three way deal with the Nationals concerning Manny Ramirez. They would probably lose Chad Cordero and possibly acquire Noah Lowry. However it is just speculation. The Nationals Ryan Church, Jose Vidro, and Chad Cordero are all drawing interest in other trades.

Orioles: Rodrigo Lopez is on the topic of most general managers list of pitchers. The Mariners, Brewers, and Mets have all inquired about Lopez but no deal appears imminent. The Brewers have offered Kevin Mench but a formal offer will have to be sketched out. The Braves appear interested in Brian Roberts but the Orioles are reluctant to trade him.

Padres: The Padres are closing in on a deal with Greg Maddux. The deal is estimated at a one year deal worth 10 million dollars with an option for one more. They are also interested in Jason Schmidt and Ronnie Belliard.

Phillies: A frustrating off season so far might make a turn for the worst. Pat Burrell is drawing little to know interest and the Phillies continue to struggle to find pitching. Eaton only pitched in 65 innings and pitched okay when he returned. They are looking to Chicago to acquire Freddy Garcia, possibly reuniting Aaron Rowand. The Cubs might also be interested in Aaron Rowand because they are in need of a center fielder.

Pirates: The Pirates are talking with the Braves and Reds about Adam LaRoche and Adam Dunn. They have also inquired about Trot Nixon for right field. None of these deals appear to be finalized soon. The Pirates do have a slight advantage with the overload of pitching. They could acquire a decent hitter for a pitcher or two.

Rangers: The Rangers and Vicente Padilla have agreed to a three year deal, worth 33 million dollars. This will set the minimum for other second tier pitchers like Ted Lilly and Gil Meche. The Rangers also expect to make a serious run for Barry Zito, who is seeking a six year deal, worth 17 million annually.

Red Sox: The Red Sox are close to signing Julio Lugo and J.D. Drew. They also plan to finalize a deal with Daisuke Matsuzaka. Theo Epstein has also set a deadline for when he will stop trying to trade Manny Ramirez. THIS JUST IN: The Red Sox have agreed to a 5 year deal, worth 70 million dollars. I do not see Manny Ramirez being traded because the teams that are pursuing him do not have what the Red Sox want. Or they are not willing to part with what the Red Sox want.

Reds: The Reds have signed a 2 year deal, worth 5 million dollars total with Dave Weathers. Other than Weathers and Gonzalez, that is all the news from the Reds office. Adam Dunn is drawing some interest from teams but no deals have been worked out.

Rockies: The Rockies have signed LaTroy Hawkins and he will be their setup man. Several teams have inquired about Jason Jennings including the Astros, Cubs, Mariners, Mets, Rangers, and Twins. They also have interest in Kenny Lofton and Darin Erstad.

Royals: The Royals have focused on pitching, and have made an offer to Miguel Batista (3/24). They also have put Gil Meche as a top priority but it appears he will either go to the Cubs or Blue Jays.

Tigers: Jeremy Bonderman and Marcus Thames' names have come up in trades but the Tigers do not appear to be interested in trading them. They are interested in trading for Marlins pitcher Renyel Pinto. Pinto, 24, went to the Marlins last year in the Juan Pierre deal. He pitched from the bullpen most of the season.

Twins: The Twins are serious about acquiring Jason Jennings and a deal could get struck by tomorrow. With Liriano out for 2007 and Radke to retire, the Twins are looking for pitching and due to a lack of funds, will have to do it by trade. They are also working a deal to keep Rondell White.

White Sox: White Sox pitcher Brandon McCarthy may start in AAA next year unless they can trade one of their pitchers. Javier Vasquez and Freddy Garcia have both drawn a lot of interest from the Mets, Phillies, and Yankees and it is more than "50 percent" possible that one of them gets traded. The White Sox are also interested in acquiring Vernon Wells but I do not know if they have what it takes to trade him. They also have interest in Aaron Rowand.

Yankees: The Yankees have made an offer to Andy Pettitte worth 15 million for one year. The Yankees and Bernie Williams have also had minor discussions about a deal. They are also close to a deal with Kei Igawa. They have interest in Ted Lilly, Gil Meche, and Freddy Garcia (via trade).

Angels Interested In Dunn, Abreu

The Angels are interested in free agent outfielders Adam Dunn and Bobby Abreu, according to Ken Rosenthal. "I would say we'll continue to look at different ways to improve the club," Reagins said. "If something makes sense for us, we'd look at it. We'd have to see what the parameters are, how that player fits." The Angels would likely trump any front-runner for a one year deal if they got serious in talks. They have a strong lineup, beautiful stadium, and the money to lock up a player long term. If a guy like Adam Dunn can help the Angels next season, he could recieve the long term deal he deserves.

Interview with Torii Hunter

Angels outfielder Torii Hunter arrived at the Winter Meetings yesterday to discuss his foundation, Hunter's Hundreds, with baseball executives. The foundation targets schools and other programs for children and offers one hundred scholarships to kids. "Not all kids can be athletes, so it feels good to give kids other opportunities," Hunter said. Hunter won his eighth Gold Glove with the Angels this past season and is a two time All-Star. Overall, Hunter hit .279 with 21 HR with 78 RBI and 19 SB. After an interview with MLB Productions, Hunter made time to give me a quick interview, and I really appreciate it. I want to thank Mr. Dillon for making that happen.

ELI: How were you feeling as you approached Angels Stadium for the first time?

TORII: Oh, it was exciting. I was anxious. But, I couldn't wait to get out there and play in the sun, and on grass. Playing in seventy degree weather on grass doesn't get much better. [Laughs]

ELI: What would you say was your "Welcome to the Angels" moment?

TORII: In April, I had a walk off grand slam against Cleveland. When I jumped into the mosh pit, all I could here was, "You're an Angel baby!" 

ELI: What was it like returning to Minnesota for that first series?

TORII: It was tough, you know? I grew up there. I left Minnesota when I was seventeen. My mom and I were crying, I was just a kid. It was like returning home, but not living at home. 

ELI: How do you feel about Greg Maddux retiring?

TORII: I had the privilege of facing Maddux, even though I was probably one of his strikeout. It is always sad to see a great pitcher retire, especially a guy I watched growing up and coming up through the minors. He dominated everywhere he went: Atlanta, Chicago, L.A., San Diego - he played everywhere. I am honored to have played against a Hall of Famer like him. 

ELI: What are you working on to get ready for the 2009 season? 

TORII: I just have to keep being Torii. [Laughs] I want to lose some weight to help me steal some more bases. Other than that, just have to get ready for a World Series run. We are waiting on Tex [Mark Teixiera] and Sabathia, and those guys are game changers. They both want to play, at least that's what I heard. You pick one of them up, and that will make all the difference.

Angels Sign Napoli

The Angels and Mike Napoli have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one year deal worth 2 million dollars. Napoli hit .273 with 20 HR in 78 games for the Angels last season. He struggled through the first half of the season hitting just .204, but hit .388 during the second half. If healthy, he could play a huge role in the Angels run towards the playoffs.

Angels Interested In Dye

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the White Sox and Angels could match up on a trade involving Jermaine Dye. The Angels need a power bat after losing Mark Teixeira, and the White Sox are looking for speed and have had interest in adding Chone Figgins for some time. Dye will make 11.5 million dollars in 2009, and has a mutual option with a one million dollar buyout for 2010. Dye has a limited no-trade clause, but he would probably waive his trade clause to play in California, his home state. 

Talks have not gotten serious, which makes me think the Angels may be exploring options on the free agent market, perhaps Adam Dunn or Manny Ramirez.

Angels Turning To Sabathia?

According to the Los Angeles Times, the Angels will pursue other needs as they wait for their Mark Teixeira's price to fall. What this means is that the Angels will aggressively pursue CC Sabathia as they wait for Teixeira to back of his ten year demands. The Angels have reportedly met with CC Sabathia and plan to extend him a 140-million dollar contract offer, similar to the one the Yankees have offered. It is hard to argue that Mark Teixiera does not deserve the twenty-million dollars he is asking for. He is a game changer, who is still solid in the field and a leader in the clubhouse. While the ten years is a lot to ask for, seven or eight years is not unreasonable. 

He is twenty-eight years old, has hit .290 over the course of his career, and has his best years ahead of him. Aside from contributing to the team, you could put a new face on the franchise and create a marketing campaign as he approaches historic milestones (assuming he stays healthy). Either way, he will be a draw in Anaheim.
