The Cardinals announced today that Chris Carpenter will undergo elbow surgery and will be out until September. However, his progress will determine if he will pitch in September. Carpenter has pitched since Opening Night, and came down with elbow inflammation following the game. The discomfort that was felt was bone spurs, and some swelling along with arthritis. Although he has thrown successful bullpen sessions, the following days he has experienced extreme swelling. Brad Thompson will take over Carpenter's role. The Cardinals are currently in last place with an 11-16 record, and and are trying to regroup after losing teammate Josh Hancock in an automobile accident.
