The Royals, in desperate need of pitching, are looking into second tier pitchers that would drastically improve their pitching staff. They have an offer on the table to Gil Meche; however, the Cubs appear to be the favorite to land him because of his relationship with Lou Piniella. The Blue Jays, Yankees, and Giants are also going after Meche. The Royals have also had talks with Miguel Batista, and appear to be the finalists to land him with the St. Louis Cardinals. The Royals are believed to have offered a three year deal worth 24 million dollars. However, Batista had a 7.74 ERA in 57 innings with Kansas City in 2000. The Royals also signed Dewon Brazelton and invited him to Spring Training.
