The Tigers trades top prospect Humberto Sanchez, right-handed pitcher Kevin Whelan and right-handed pitcher Anthony Claggett from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for outfielder Gary Sheffield. The Tigers acquire a run producing outfielder, a goal they were trying to accomplish this offseason. In return, the Yankees recieved three decent prospects. Sanchez went 5-3 with a 1.76 ERA in 11 starts at Double-A Erie before posting the same record with a 3.86 ERA at Triple-A Toledo. Whelan saved 27 games for Class A Lakeland, going 4-1 with a 2.67 ERA in the process. Claggett went 7-2 with a 0.91 ERA and 14 saves for low Class A West Michigan.
After being traded, Sheffield signed a two year contract extention.
