Red Sox Make Varitek Offer

According to ESPN.com, the Red Sox have made Jason Varitek a one year offer worth an undisclosed amount. Varitek is coming off his worst offensive year hitting .220 with 13 HR in 131 games. The Red Sox reportedly are pursuing other options, eyeing Rangers catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Gerald Laird. Not many teams are interested in Varitek, 37, but he will likely get picked up. He is a solid veteran with playoff experience and could help a struggling pitching staff like the Tigers.

The Nationals could take a chance on him as well, assuming his price is low.
