Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo is going to have arthroscopic knee surgery on Tuesday, the Providence Journal is reporting. If all goes well, Lugo could be back on the field in about a month. Lugo hit .268 with 1 HR in 82 games last season for the Red Sox, and won't be a free agent until after 2010. However, if Lugo gets 2,400 plate appearances between 2007-2010, an option for 2011 kicks in. So far, he has 831.
This injury opens the way for Jed Lowrie to win the starting job early on. Although Lugo was hitting .450 with 4 HR, Lowrie is hitting .385 with 5 RBI in 26 at-bats.
