The Mets have decided to shut down starter Tim Redding due to a lack of shoulder strength, the Newark Star-Ledger is reporting. Mets GM Omar Minaya reiterated that Redding is not injured, but that he needs to build up his arm strength. "He feels good in the bullpen, but he lacks strength in the shoulder area," Minaya said. "We will let him rest for a while, make sure that his strength comes back before we put him back on the mound."
This setback probably takes Redding out of the race for the number five spot, leaving it to Freddy Garcia, Livan Hernandez, and John Niese. However, all three of those pitchers are struggling this Spring, opening up speculation to signing free agent Pedro Martinez.
