With six outfielders seriously vying for a starting spot, Skip Schumaker may be the odd man out. Schumaker will take ground balls at second base, but he has never played there in his career. Not only that, but he is up against Brendan Ryan, Jarrett Hoffpauir, Brian Barden, and non-roster invitee Joe Thurston. La Russa had some words of encouragement for Schumaker, saying he could easily take the job if he continues to work hard.
Best case scenario for the Cardinals is that Schumaker turns into a Aaron Miles like player in 2009. However, a team like the Giants or White Sox, who are in need of a versatile player, could make a play for him. If Schumaker can prove to teams that he can play second base, the Cardinals could move him.
