The A's and free agent pitcher Russ Springer are closing in on a one year agreement. The Athletics have been trying to improve their bullpen for two seasons now and adding Springer certainly makes it stronger. Springer, who will likely make three million dollars in 2009, went 2-1 with a 2.32 ERA in 70 games last season for the Cardinals. Springer was not offered arbitration from the Cardinals, so the Athletics do not need to forfeit a draft pick.
The Cubs and Twins also had interest in Springer.
