The Red Sox and Takashi Saito have agreed to a one year contract with a club option for 2010, Ken Rosenthal is reporting. Saito is a low risk signing with high reward, and can earn up to seven million dollars in incentives. Saito, 39, will make for a nice late inning reliever in front of Jon Papelbon. Saito, who went 4-4 with a 2.49 ERA in 45 games, will make for a great mentor to Junichi Tazawa, as will Hideki Okajima and Daisuke Matsuzaka.
Having a significant Japanese presence in the clubhouse should loosen things up, especially with all the success they are having. Not only that, but three of these players are proven All-Stars in Japan, and probably have different ideas on how to approach hitters here. Combine their scouting and knowledge, and these guys could have pretty solid years together.
