The Red Sox are reportedly closing in on deals with free agents John Smoltz and Rocco Baldelli. Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Red Sox and John Smoltz are nearing a one year deal worth 5.5 million dollars. The deal holds incentives that could give Smoltz up to 10 million dollars. Signing Smoltz gives them a proven veteran in an already solid rotation. His shoulder is fragile, but he will give the Red Sox good numbers.
As for Baldelli, he is a day or two away from signing a deal with Baldelli. He makes for a solid fourth outfielder behind J.D. Drew, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Jason Bay.
