Padres Sign Eckstein

The Padres and David Eckstein have agreed to a one year deal, according to Ken Rosenthal. Eckstein will play as a stop gap for prospect Matt Antonelli, who will likely start the year in Triple-A. The Padres payroll is around 40 million dollars, and it could be cut more if they do end up trading Jake Peavy.

The Padres are hoping to add a shortstop, which could come in the form of veteran Omar Vizquel. However, the Padres like Cubs shortstop Ronny Cedeno and could try to make a trade for him. He is out of options, so the Cubs are probably willing to make a deal.
