Cubs' Cedeno Drawing Interest

Cubs shortstop Ronny Cedeno, who is out of options, is drawing interest from several teams. The Cubs are hoping to get a starter out of the deal, which makes sense since his name has been involved in the Jake Peavy talks. Cedeno hit .269 with 2 HR in 99 games for the Cubs last season, which included a .378 average in the month of April. Cedeno hit .286 with 4 HR in 48 games in Winter League, and many think his improved presense at the plate will only get better. Don't rule out Ronny Cedeno beating out Aaron Miles and Mike Fontenot for the job at second base.

The Mariners have shown interest in Ronny Cedeno and may be willing to part with Aaron Heilman, Bruce Levine is reporting. Heilman struggled in 2008, but had a 3.03 ERA in 2007 and a career 4.24 ERA. He hasn't made a start in three seasons, but he would give the Cubs another reliever, fortifying the bullpen. Cedeno was also connected to the Royals when the Cubs asked about Zack Grienke, but that rumor died when the Royals said he was not available.

Cedeno's improved patience and defense makes him a very valuable player. I wonder why the Cubs feel the need to trade him, especially after trading young prospects Felix Pie and Eric Patterson in the past six months.

I think the Cubs should do whatever it takes to win and win this season. If that means trading some good young players then they have to do that. I heard on the radio that the Cubs are talking to the Padres about Peavy and they want Vitters and Sean Marshall and Olson I think as the 3rd guy. Is that too much? Or should they go for it and have a great pitching staff?

I know that Cedeno has struggled thus far putting it all together at the major league level, but I think he is a better shortstop option than Theriot. I know that Theriot is faster, but Cedeno is better with the glove, he will (when given the same chance to play everyday) hit for a higher average, with slightly more power. I would rather see the Cubs trade Theriot.

I think the Cubs are about to enter a time when they are just a decent team. they are trading away all their promising youth, while signing older veterans who will start to deteriorate. The Cubs never give their young players a chance, they ruin them on the bench and trade them away...bobby hill, corey patterson, brant brown....micah hoffpauir is 28, theriot is 29, fontenot is 28...the youngest player on the field is 25, that is soto. he had a good 2008, but he needs to prove himself in 2009 as a legitimate starter.

the future doesn't look to bright...

future not bright with a new owner worth 2.6 billion and if Peavy is added 3 front of the line starters signed for 4 years, but yeah the future isn't bright. RIIIIIIIIIIGHT, more like your hopeful and wishful thinking on your part.

As a Cub fan I say Cedeno and Hill will both be traded before the season begins.

first off, WE HAVE NOT ACQUIRED PEAVY!!!!!!!! terrible argument. the team does not have a bright future with no young prospects, besides vitters. we have one of the worst minor league systems, filled with 20-somethings and hard throwing relievers...we dont have much.

Hey buddy why don't you stop saying we cause by the posts you keep putting up like soto needs to show himself as a starter, did you even watch games last year. You kinda sound like a dope, we may not have the best farm system in baseball but I believe we have plenty of talent in it.

When you have a top 3 payroll a farm system is not life or death. Do I wish it were way better OBVIOUSLY, but the Cubs are not the royals if they need to fill holes in the future I'm sure that check book can fix that. Cubs develop good players when they aren't considered blue chippers. EX: Soto, Marmol, Zambrano, Theriot were never high ceiling guys, but when we do rate a guy high EX: Orie, Roosevelt Brown, Patterson, Juan Cruz, Pie, Bobby Hill they all bust. So a farm is not really a big deal for non small market team.
