The Oakland Athletics are reportedly targeting free agent lefty Randy Johnson, according to Ken Rosenthal. Johnson is drawing interest from the Dodgers and Cubs, but may choose to stay out West near his family. The Athletics view Johnson as a number five starter, but he will certainly have a bigger impact than that. Johnson commands respect in the clubhouse and could guide their young pitchers through the 2009 season. Not only that, but Johnson will bring fans to the stadium as he closes in on 300 wins.
Johnson probably isn't close to signing, but fully intends to play next season. Talks will probably pick up during the Winter Meetings.
